What is an IC (integrated circuit) mask?

The silicon of an IC is fabricated into the product by exposing the silicon to diffusion of impurities or metal to produce semiconductor material or metallic connections. A photosensitive coating is used so that only parts of the IC surface are exposed to diffusion. The coating is etched after being exposed using the photographic IC mask. The IC mask therefore controls which parts of an IC surface will be diffused. There are a number of different masks required for IC production however there is one masking stage that is used to put the MULTOS software into a smartcard IC.
